북한자유연합 (North Korea Freedom Coalition) 소개

북한자유연합는 북한주민의 자유, 인권, 인간의 존엄성을 위해 지난 2003년 창설된 비영리, 비정치적 연합입니다. 이 단체는 현재 한국, 미국, 일본에 70개의 연합 단체와 연계되어 있으며 개인 회원을 포함해 수백만 명의 회원을 보유하고 있습니다. 북한자유연합은 또한 북한탈북민을 인도주의적 차원에서 돕는 개인회원들이 있습니다. (The North Korea Freedom Coalition is a nonpartisan coalition founded in June, 2003 to work for the freedom, human rights, and dignity of the North Korea people.  The Coalition currently has over 70 public member organizations representing millions of American, South and North Korean, and Japanese citizens as well as other nations, along with many individual members.  The Coalition also has private members that provide humanitarian relief inside North Korea and members in China and other nations that feed, shelter, and rescue North Korean refugees.)

1) 북한과 관련한 정부의 주요 정책을 다룰 때 인권을 핵심으로 한다 (Make Human Rights the key policy of all governments in dealing with North Korea)
2) 탈북민이 생존하도록 돕고 중국이 탈북민에 대한 강경대책을 중단하도록 촉구한다 (Save Lives by helping rescue refugees and pressuring China to to end its brutal repatriation policy)
3) 북한의 강제 정치 수용소를 폐쇄하도록 한다 (Close down political prison camps in North Korea)
4) 한국전쟁 포로들을 포함한 납북된 자들을 석방하도록 촉구한다 (Pressure the DPRK to Release all abductees including Korean War POWs)
5) 모든 수단과 방법을 동원해 북한으로 각종 정보가 들어갈 수 있도록 홍보한다 (Promote information into North Korea through all means)
6) 북한주민에 먹을 것을 제공하되 북한 정부가 이를 통제하지 못하도록 한다 (Get food aid directly to the North Korean people and end all food aid distribution controlled by the regime)

미국의 대북관련 시민단체(NGO) 연대기구인 ‘북한자유연합’은 9일(현지시간) 미 상원 덕슨빌딩에서 기자회견을 열고 “북한이 조직적으로 독가스연구소를 갖고 정치범을 대상으로 한 독가스 실험실을 운영해온 게 탈북자들의 증언으로 확인됐다”면서 “유엔과 국제적십자사 등 국제기구가 북한의 정치범 대상 가스실험실 실태조사에 나서야 한다”고 주장했다고 문화일보가 10일 보도했다.

북한자유연합는 미국의 시민단체 및 종교계 NGO, 한국계 미국인들의 NGO 40여개가 북한인권문제의 국제적 공론화를 위해 만든 연합기구로 올해 미의회에서 북한인권법이 제정ㆍ통과되는데 결정적인 역할을 했다.

신문에 따르면 로스앤젤레스의 유대계 인권단체 ‘시몬 비젠덜 센터’의 에이브러햄 쿠퍼 부대표는 이날 기자회견을 갖고 “지난 11월 서울에서 만난 화학자 출신 탈북자 이범식(가명·55)씨는 1979년 평성 정치군사교도소 의 유리가스실에서 2명의 정치범을 대상으로 한 독가스실험을 감독했다고 증언했다”면서 “탈북자 권혁(44), 전지승(31)씨도 정치범 대상 독가스 실험 실태에 대한 구체적이고도 신뢰할만한 증언을 했다”고 말했다.
